question for the general public
so to those of you who aren’t macho-Sasquatch types I pose this: if you are billed on a show with bands you feel uncomfortable around/who create an unsafe environment is it acceptable to leave? I know the answer seems obvious. I came up in a punk scene I usually felt at ease in. canceling and bailing on shows has a flaky asshole stigma attached to it in my mind.
I played a show recently that in retrospect I wish I’d left. i felt completely anxious and alienated and pretty unsafe. it was a style of bro mosh hyper-masculine garbage hardcore that I ain’t trying to mess with. is that terrible? this is, in the grand scheme of things, supposed to be fun. what do you think world? it’s not a snob thing, i swear. diverse bills can be so cool. it’s a safety thing. what’s up?
